The ghost filter prank is a TikTok and Snapchat trend where someone films a person going about their day while a camera effect adds a ghost creeping up behind them. The person on screen does not know it is there; the joke is the ghost, or the reaction when they watch the video back.
The first wave ran in August and September 2022, with a transparent, red-eyed figure, and drew criticism because many clips used it to frighten small children. The October 2026 wave is different: the ghost is grey, with long grey hair, huge blank white eyes and a wide grin, it rises slowly over the shoulder, and the targets are parents, grandparents, partners and roommates. A clip of a South African grandmother posted on October 6, 2026 spread widely, and CapCut's "GHOST FILTER" template showed about 1.32 million uses on October 13.
